2018 season wrap and final voting results

20/10/2018 By Chris 1 Comment

Hi everyone, its Chris here. Time has passed and I still feel gutted about losing the preliminary final to Collingwood. I ignored the first three quarters of the Grand Final, something I have never done before. And to be honest, it was a doozy. But we weren’t there. We were all so certain we would be – maybe we  “got ahead of ourselves” – and I still feel like it’s an opportunity missed, and that casts a shadow back over all our good work and the fun of being the top dogs all through 2018.
Embed from Getty Images

But it was fun. We had fun in the sun as premiers, games clear on top of the ladder, with the reigning Brownlow medallist, coach of the year etc, we won everything but the Cox Plate. This year we got Jack winning the Coleman medal, Snags won the GOTY, and we broke the 36-year McClelland trophy drought. Winning stuff was fun. And that’s my analysis done.

Next year I am handing the baton of The Benny to Brendan O’Reilly whose excellent work you have already enjoyed here from time to time.  Thanks to Brendan for this offer at a time when we thought TTBB might be looking at a year off in 2019. I will continue to chip in photos and graphics and keep adding to the Richmond Virtual Duffle Coat. I am interested in trying to get a public display of the Coat happening somewhere in the Richmond 3121 vicinity so if you have any ideas about that, drop me a line.

Take care in the off season, and bring on 2019.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Awards

  • Congratulations to our great skipper Trent Cotchin who wins his second Benny.
  • Josh Caddy had a breakout season and wins the Blair Hartley Appreciation Award for recruits from other clubs. He regularly dominated games playing beside a bloke who won the Coleman.
  • Jack Higgins was the only first year player to poll Benny votes so he wins the 2018 Anthony Banik Award. Snags has given us all a lot of fun this year and shaken up the pecking order.
  • A combination of a solid season and a lack of fellow lefties, see Toby Nankervis take out this year’s Joel Bowden’s Golden Left Boot. We love you Nank.
  • Cal Moore and Liam Baker came off the rookie list this year but did not get votes, so the Tivendale stays in the velvet bag in the drawer.
  • Jack Graham had a lot to live up to after his ’17 finals heroics. He never stopped tackling and wins the 2018 Maurice Rioli Grip of Death Trophy

Qualifying Final v Hawthorn at the MCG

12/09/2018 By Chris 5 Comments

We did not smash our way into September, we did not barnstorm … we cruised our way into September. Over the last month we collected the 4 points without too many thrills or spills. Injured players recuperated, we stayed on top of the ladder. There was no change to the season’s starting proposition – Richmond are the best team in it. This was unfortunate for journos, who have to work hard to try to spin a grander narrative.

I only made it to one roster match this year – the first. At quarter time of round one I thought, oh boy, Brendan Bolton’s boys are going to scare some good sides this year. But it was not to be – we went in radically different directions after that. That Sliding Doors bloke has probably done a really smart episode about it.

For New Richmond’s 4th final Marcus and I settled in to watch in the spare room, decorated for the occasion. Ellis dropped! Didn’t quite see that coming.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Q1

Such an intense beginning. I love footy like this, a mad scramble with intense desire for the ball trumping systems and even skills. The great thing is it is widely available in September all over the country.

Richmond were on top of the Hawks and dominated the quarter. One of our many forward thrusts fell into George’s hands and he, presented with many options, chose very well, chipping it across to Kam McIntosh. Immediately after this kick I saw Sheds coaching Dan Rioli who was fully tuned in to the voice of experience. Shortly afterwards Dan crumbed a ball at his ankles and scored an opportunistic goal.

We were killing ’em really. The one shot they earned was shanked badly by one of their leaders, Burgoyne. Our composure was superior but we gave away a couple of 50s which resulted in goals, keeping Hawthorn in the game. They started to show glimmers of fight late in the quarter.

Embed from Getty Images

Q2

Again it was our quarter early before Hawthorn gave themselves some hope late. Nank marked and the TV producer clearly knew what would come next although the Hawks didn’t. He dished to Shorty who missed. A fight broke out and the same TV producer decided to focus on that while the game went on in a little window. Now listen old mate. This is a final at the MCG with everything to play for. This isn’t a dead rubber at Metricon in the Sunday graveyard shift. If you must show the fight you pop THAT in the window while we watch the game.

Breust missed a soda and any small apprehension I had felt melted away. Shortly after that Dusty thumped a wonder goal from the boundary; we are doing the impossible while they are stuffing up the probable. Wonderful to see Kamdyn hit the scoreboard and he seemed to be bobbing up everywhere.

Embed from Getty Images

Dusty threaded the needle on the boundary to find Prestia. Mitchell seemed to have gone quiet. Our best in the first half are Dusty, Sheds, Rance, Cotchin, Kamdyn and George. Our backline was impenetrable. I called the game for us at half time.

Q3

Kamdyn in defence took another great stopping mark then set off on a brave run that came off. So many of our next tier are playing with boundless confidence. Moments later up the other end he nailed his third. Our defensive marks are winning this game. They can’t get an inside 50 for love or money. Grimes is having a great quarter as Rance did in the first. Astbury is quiet. Dion goals again – ours are just coming so easy compared to theirs. Rioli goals. We are simply too good for this mob. They fell into the top 4 and we owned top spot, and it looks like it. You’ll have to do better than this, rest-of-the-AFL.

Now Higgins goals. The Hawks have 5 majors – we are just crushing them with pressure. Edwards magnificent. It’s like we are playing a different game. Never in my life (apart from 2nd half of 2017 GF) have I felt so confident that Richmond is on its way to a flag. As Joe suggested last week, Dusty was playing August footy in August and now he’s unveiled his September footy, and its something to behold. Congratulations on your 200th, to the best player going around at the moment and probably one of the all-time greats.

Q4

Dusty the Great went quiet later in that term. Hawks inexperienced players have not stood up, some senior players have had mares (Gunston, Breust) and Clarkson has not fired a shot. Nankervis is such a key for us – thank you baby Jesus and the Blessed Oliver Plunkett for looking after him these last two years. Nank just does his job, it’s as simple as that. And we love him for it.

Sheds tries a few cute moves in this quarter that don’t come off. Riewoldt and Rance both have ankle/foot scares. At the end the vice captains come off arm in arm, sore feet forgotten for now, with a week off to sort them out. There’s Rachel Hofton in the cheer squad!

Oh we’re from Tigerland. What do you mean I have to go to work tomorrow?

Round 22 v Essendon at the MCG

12/09/2018 By Chris Leave a Comment

It’s ironic that as Richmond barrels towards a likely 2nd successive grand final, TTBB is sputtering uphill on bald tires with practically nothing left in the tank. This is not a plea for financial support – we don’t cost much to run and that’s covered by our merch sales (thank you to everyone who has bought a little piece of Tiger Tiger for themselves). Spare time for blogging has been hard to come by of late, and even organising contributors takes time and energy. But the end is in sight!

To business – our unimpressive but competent dispatch of Essendon in round 22, about three weeks ago. We looked too good for most of the night but gave up the last 4 goals of the game. We went in without Cotch, Lambert, Prestia or Astbury, but brought back Nank and sent Ivan II back to the VFL.
Embed from Getty Images
More was probably written about a handshake at the coin toss than was written about the match. Such as by the self-satirising Andrew Bolt. I don’t know Adam Saad very well but I do know Bachar Houli is a great Australian and if more like him are keen to come here, I will bake them a halal cake.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Q1: Loved Grimes attack on the ball to dead-heat Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti. And George’s one-two dance move for our third goal.

Q2: Our quarter but we lost our way in front of goal, kicking 1.6. A chain of passes out of deep defence ending with Bachar in the forward pocket was sublime. And Caddy marking on the point post while Goddard was busy pointing.

Q3: A frustrating night for stand-in skipper Jack although/because Josh Caddy just kept judging the pack marks better. Bruce McAvaney said “Caddy” like he was singing a death metal song about golf. Young Baker kicked his first.

Embed from Getty Images

Q4: Cale Hooker who is a 7/10 footballer briefly looked like a 9 and Essendon gave their long-suffering faithful a bit of sunshine. We switched into cottonwool mode and coughed up some cheapies. Not Dan Rioli though, his late tackle on Adam Saad saved a few blushes. As Dimma said “It was a terrible game of footy, but I was happy with the win”.

Round 21 v Gold Coast at Carrara

15/08/2018 By Chris 2 Comments

So it’s Wednesday night, I am writing a match report and the only thing I can remember about the Gold Coast game is Jack kicked ten. OK – I am prepared to say up front this one will be phoned in. I’ll watch the highlights again but that’s it. Very much feel we have bigger fish to fry. Jack Riewoldt Goal. Jack Riewoldt Goal. Fantastic Little Ivan soccer assist to Jack Riewoldt then Jack Riewoldt Goal.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Q1

Fantastic Little Ivan soccer assist to Jack Riewoldt then

Silky hands of Dan Rioli stream out of the centre and a little chip to Jack Riewoldt 45 out and

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Q2

Little Ivan hands it to Josh Caddy who salutes with a lovely shot from an angle. Sorry Josh, no graphic for you.
Then a long kick finds Grigga who outsmarts a hapless golden coastal, flips it to Ellis via – Vlossy? – and Brando spots up Jack Riewoldt.

Suns jag one, Dusty Kicks Across His Body™ to Caddy for his second, followed soon by this 3rd with help from Jacks Higgins and and Riewoldt. At half time JR has 5, with Caddy and Gold Coast both on 3. It’s reasonably tight.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Q3

Martin -> Riewoldt and he could have notched his sixth but instead lobbed it to Joshua ‘Cadds’ Caddy who now has 4.

Steven May and Pearce Hanley are both footballers but in the next few minutes they look like prize numpties, and thanks to them we get a) a rare goal to Brando and then from tight on the left boundary another …

200-game Milestone Man™ Shane Edwards gives the worst handpass of his career, but with no pressure being exerted anywhere, Dan Rioli goes and fetches it, hands it back and Shane underkicks a feeble little effort that nevertheless brings up two flags. It’s more than a cakewalk, it’s a potato cake walk.

Bachar looks from these snippets to have been moving well, he cruised through the centre and delivered precisely to the Riewoldt breadbasket area. Hard to tell from the abbreviated highlights if he got 50 or not but anyway with little trouble he notched another…

Right down the spine Prestia (hammy looking fine) finds Lambert (ankle looking fine at this point) who pivots and hits the man the French call Le Jaques Magnifique. One more…

Caddy and Vlastuin also scored in that quarter but didn’t feature in the highlights, sorry.

Scorecheck at 3QT: Jack with 8 goals has pulled away and left Caddy (4) and Gold Coast Football Club (3) squabbling over silver.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Q4

Callum Ah Chee took a speccy, fair dos to him. Great ride on Astbury. Ellis kicked his second (even more rare). Just to show I did do a tiny bit of work for this, here are some people who played alongside Brando last time he kicked two; Orren Stephenson, Brett O’Hanlon and Aaron Bloody Edwards. Round 10, 2013. And have a guess who kicked 11 that day? Go on. Have a guess.

Classic outside of the boot goal to Dusty. Jack H marks, shows the ball and pops it over the top to Jack R who is giving S May an ocean-sized bath.

The team the Chinese know as 冷吐司 actually put a few things together in this quarter and nearly double their 3QT score, frankly running all over Josh Caddy.

With seconds to go the Tiges win possession on the back of the square then carry it bucket brigade-style to Jack Higgins who shovels a handpass on the bounce to the waiting dual Coleman Medallist who hoists his tenth.

So that’s Riewoldt 10, Gold Coast Football Club’s 22 players 7, Josh Caddy 4. Hard luck Josh, maybe you’ll get a priority pick or something.

I am just going by the AFL match report here, so let me know in the comments if someone has been robbed blind.

5 Riewoldt – not much more needs saying. I really hope he can put the Bombers and the Dogs to the sword and collect another Coleman.
4 Caddy – has just passed Nank in the Hartley (see below). It’s a measure of how bloody well so many of our blokes are going that he gets hardly any press.
3 Martin – point this fellow at September and light the blue touch paper.
2 Lambert – Hope he gets over his ankle op quick smart. A required player for us to be us.
1 Short – Would not have been my pick in March as the bolter of the year but clearly is.

Round 19 v Collingwood at the MCG

30/07/2018 By Chris 3 Comments

I met up with Tiger neighbours Adrian and Sophie at the pub to watch this one. The Dr Syntax Hotel is the spiritual home of the late lamented Sandy Bay Football Club. (It has carried this name since the 1890s and I think it’s named for a racehorse).

That’s Kam McIntosh at far right.

Things got off to a flyer when the barman shouted me my first beer because he liked my Maurice Rioli shirt. He wants to get a framed Rioli print to complement all the SBFC Seagulls memorabilia.

The Seagulls 77 premiership side line up behind captain-coach, former Tiger Paul Sproule. 8th in line is 1980 Richmond premiership player Stephen Mount.

Adrian and Sophie were coming from an auction. They bought some chairs and were very keen on a display cabinet but Adrian tipped that the bidding process would cost him the whole first quarter of the footy – so they so withdrew. There were about a dozen Pies at the pub outnumbering a handful of Tigers, and all of us toey as a Roman sandal.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Embed from Getty Images
1st Q
When George opened the scoring from a set shot you could feel 100,000 Tigers across the land breathe easier – his yips have been a concern. George marked outside 50 and handed off to Shorty who bombed it from all of 60. All Pies would have turned to Varcoe and said “your man – don’t let this happen again”. It did, 90 seconds later, this time the assist came from debutant Liam Baker. The young man had a great chance to kick his first minutes later, and dragged it left. Towner chased a ball into the right forward pocket and honestly looked as slow as a wet week. In the pub an 80 year old in a flat cap crossed slowly in front of the TV on his way to the pub TAB and I wasn’t the only one who said “Towner”.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Embed from Getty Images
2nd Q
A highlight was a magnificent Dusty kick to Jack’s advantage. to mark and goal. Dusty started slow under Greenwood’s thumb but was now wriggling out. He kicked goals either side of half time.

The Grimes and Broad chase on Stephenson got the pub on its feet. The Pie wrong-footed Broad and then steamed away from him, to the delight fo the black and white. Ran and bounced three times. Grimes enters the frame before the second bounce and mows down first his teammate (“F&%$ off out of the way Broady!”) and then the opponent, getting just enough pressure on the kick that it’s OOF. Magnificent football, first-class comedy. This was the Pies’ quarter though. Grundy dominating.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Embed from Getty Images
3rd Q
What is Jack Higgins? Really? He’s leapfrogged Stengel and Bolton into this side, he’s held his place in that midfield even when he wasn’t kicking goals, and now he kicked the greatest snag of the year. There are about eleven different kinds of great goals and it’s hard to compare the Buddy 55m set shot inside out working back post high to the 6-bounces-3-dummies Mick McGuane type, but I think Higgins just invented a new kind.
Embed from Getty Images

We are holding them at bay. George gets on the end of a chain following Manic Richmond Pressure™ in the centre, especially from Cotch. He’s maybe our best but the three BOG are all Pies – Grundy, Thomas and Pendlebury. We go to the last change just four points up and at our table we are leaning heavily on the Tiges Great Last Quarter habit to kick in.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

4th Q
It’s a Great Last Quarter. 1 minute in Jack takes a pack mark and converts. 2 mins in Jack outpoints Moore and Edwards crumbs, has possession for 0.001 seconds and hands to Towner who goals. 5 mins in Dusty is left one-out with Greenwood – and predictably goals with Greenwood on the ground flapping about like a fish. Edwards and Rioli pile on the pain. It’s a procession, in fact after 3QT you could say its a cakewalk. Extremely even effort – the votes are harder than usual.

5. Cotchin was our best player over 4 quarters. He does so much hard work, you just glimpse him involved everywhere, with the occasional big hit. He can stop a charging rhino. Imagine Cotch and Dusty on opposite sides, if you dare. The League match report has neither in the best players,

4. Astbury … but they do have Astbury as our best on. He’s playing better than Rance at the moment, doing all the great Rance things with never a brain fade. He makes execution mistakes, not decision mistakes. He took a fiercely contested marked running back with the ball where anyone else except Rance would have ‘killed it’ over the line. He’s a rock.

3. Riewoldt was huge. I think he’s at his peak now, he knows his own game so well and our uncomplicated game plan built around him up front means he is just enjoying his work.

2. Edwards again was too fast, too unpredictable and too precise in disposal for Collingwood to stop him.

1. Short played pretty well but his vote is just down to his 2 long bombs. Gave us a good lead but also a great laugh at Collingwood’s expense.

Round 16 v Adelaide Crows at the MCG

Its a bit late now to do a proper match report. After a tight first quarter we pulled way in the 2nd. They won the 3rd quarter to creep within 3 goals. And then we scorched em, torched em, boot-up-the-arse-out-to-the-back-porched em in the last term in Classic Tigers 2018™ style.

That moment above was my highlight. Jack Riewoldt, magnificent. He’s having a stellar season and in a very tight field has to be a chance of B&F honours.

We are such an entertaining side at the minute. We are Running On Top Of The Ground. Case in point – even the sloppiest handballs are finding someone. Looking at you Butts.

Why go back for the set shot when you can snap like that?

Great contributions by Broad (10 touches first term) Grigg, Caddy, Edwards and Riewoldt. I am relying somewhat on the AFL match report and stats here.

Round 12 v Port Adelaide, Adelaide Oval – The Benny 2018

10/06/2018 By Chris Leave a Comment

Going into a game without Dusty for the first time in ages, I really hoped his absence would make room for others to stand up, in the way Hawthorn without Buddy played with a different and more creative style. But as 2017’s best player and Richmond’s ‘get out of jail free’ card, it was more likely to just bring us back to the pack.I don’t rate Port. Too many individuals. They added Jack Watts and Steven Motlop in the off season, (which by now should have been nicknamed Wattslop. Footy media letting the side down again.) I thought we had them covered, even away and without Martin.

Turns out he wouldn’t have even seen the ball for a while, as we were camped in defence from the first bounce.

2018 has been the year of the double fist thump. I don’t know who decided this was better than an almost uncontested mark but it’s happening all over now. Vlastuin executed a DFT in the first minutes and we didn’t get it into attack until 7 minutes later.

Dixon was just rag-dolling Rance at this stage and it looked ominous. Luckily Port fulfilled my lowly opinion and found various ways to stuff up great opportunities. Short was magnificent sweeping up and starting moves from half back. His kicks always found a target but the next phase broke down repeatedly.

This was the slipperiest Sherrin I have ever seen. The handling errors, and players clean bowled by a tumbling ball – have never seen the like. It was tense like all low scoring games but not great viewing. Robbie Gray basketball-dribbled as if just to point out that the ball was fine, these were purely human errors.

The tide turned when Westhoff tried to set up Neade with a ball to run onto. Cotchin wanted it more and it was back in Tiger hands.

Halfway through the first Q Jack took a pack mark and kicked truly and normal football resumed for a while. Sheds got two in just over a minute and we looked like going to the huddle with all the momentum. Then we manufactured another chance, Conca tried to thread it through a crowd at ankle-height, and it swept down the other end where Sam Gray wasted another gettable chance. Tiges by 7 at the break. Short, Riewoldt, Edwards, McIntosh, Broad, Grimes and Grigg all playing well.

Jack extended our lead after a remarkable grab leaping over a collapsing pack. Everything now seemed to be travelling nicely. Then 200cm Charlie Dixon sold the dummy to new opponent Astbury and kicked long for Westhoff to kick an easy one. Then it was bang bang bang. We conceded 7 goals to 2 in the quarter, our 5th coming to Ant Miles who looked right at home back in the ones.

Vlastuin was taking important marks and Conca was fearlessly bodylining the ball. Nank exhibited a few brain fades. The umpires shared out the howlers pretty fairly I thought but a hold the ball against Conca here was criminal. As is Jared Polec’s hair, what the hell is going on there.

Power by 23 at half time.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

Turns out we could have wrapped it up there. The sides kicked three goals between them in the second half.

Jack backed into a pack without actually putting his arms up for the incoming ball and got smashed. I didn’t see the point of that, courageous though it was.

He kicked another goal which I recall was the end of a fantastic string of passes, real Barcelona stuff. Did I imagine it? It’s not on the AFL highlights clip. Although they found time in the edit for some schoolyard scuffles between Broad and various dingalings in teal.

Caddy put a beautiful kick to George’s advantage to mark between two bigger defenders, but he sprayed it. Our set shots were generally good all night, we just didn’t get enough of them. Missed a lot of tackles too.

Sheds’ quick hands sent George on his way and he grubbed that one through to keep a spark alive. At 3QT I wrote down ‘Butler Menadue invisible, Caddy Moore nothing up front’.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

In the last quarter the skills continued to decline. An exception was George’s thrilling pack mark and goal. Otherwise it was a nil-all draw.

So look, I still don’t rate Port. We were pretty bad and half a dozen of our side might as well have gone for a few laps of Pennington Gardens instead. Sam Gray impressed me but he’s a bit greedy. Wines and Powell-Pepper were terrific for them.

Round 9 v West Coast, Optus Stadium Perth – The Benny 2018

21/05/2018 By Chris 1 Comment

This was the most generally anticipated game in footy since Round 1. Our winning streak was 6, theirs was 7.

The trick for Eastern-states Tigers was how to fill all of Sunday until the 4.40pm first bounce. Here we went down to the rivulet with 200 other people and picked up plastic and polystyrene remnants from the flood a week ago, and that passed the time nicely.

I bought a one-week AFL Live Pass for this special occasion blockbuster. 5 bucks entitled me to an appropriately phone sized picture of the sun-drenched action from Optus Stadium, Perth. Throughout the game below the picture were stats from the completed Blues v Demons massacre. I never did work out how to get the right stats. I watched in front of the fireplace, squeezed up with the 16yo on my right, and the mini iPad balanced on a couple of cushions at eye level.

After Caddy opened the scoring (free kick to Cotch, messy pack mark that I considered 40/60 payable) – it was one way traffic for the rest of the quarter. I reassured myself that we came back from a similar terrible start against Carlton, but then again that was Carlton. Our outstanding players early were Riewoldt and Edwards. Jack was in everything but missed an easy set shot (as did Martin and Grigg). Sheds was a twisting, turning link man, distributing the ball at impossible angles to his direction of movement like the great farnarkler Dave Sorenson. Cotchin marked outside 50 and telegraphed that he wanted to dish off. Jayden Short has form for this but the Eagles were dozing – he arrived through the centre square and pounded it through for our much-needed second goal. Either side of Shorty’s goal Jack Darling kicked majors, to go with Cripps, Gaff, Kennedy and Willie Rioli. Ominous signs, down 37 -15 at QT. But Elliot Yeo was off injured and looking downcast, that could be helpful.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

After the break the ship began righting itself. Sheds opened with an amazing goal. Dusty’s pass into 50 was low and hard like an un-returnable forehand winner down the tramlines. His kicking action was entirely in the horizontal plane. Sheds patted it, tamed it, gathered it and nervelessly straightened up and kicked the goal. Note; he did not draw a man and handpass over the top. He did not head for the pocket so he could checkside it on the run. Suddenly we had the momentum. Nank was taking it up to NicNat. He is such a lovely kick, he delivered it perfectly for Jack to crash the pack and mark. He snuck the kick in, we were 9 points down. Today’s Ruck Chuckles were provided by Martin against Lycett and later Broad against Naitanui.

Jack Darling was paid a mark on the boundary 50 metres out that he controlled practically sitting in a Bunnings chair. His confidence up he approached to kick it checkside, hit the Fat Part Of The Ball™ and it fell into Redden’s hands right in front. It was that sort of day. At the other end our Jack went up for Mark Of The Year an hour early and missed the ball by metres, free kick. Oh we don’t wanna penalise THAT do we?? asked a Fox genius. We were killing them at this point, but still down 44-29. Jack buried Cole in a tackle but was unrewarded. Our entries were frequent, chaotic and unrewarded. Sheds’ hands outstanding, Lloyd spinning through the crowd but no scoreboard progress. 19 inside 50s to 3 for the quarter. The pressure is incredible. With misses and a dodgy rushed behind we creep up to 44-32. Somehow none of this is getting the ball through the big sticks, until the ball flips out of a standing pack at the top of square, and Jack soccers it sweetly through with his left. To be able to think his way through this situation is completely just off the charts in terms of football intelligence yeah OK mate I think he just saw it and kicked it, actually.

25 seconds later Jack made another one. Trying to hook it through as tackled, he changed his mind and managed to just toe it one metre to George who goaled from the square. George (sporting a Tom Libba-ish barnet) had collected Conca’s soccer out of the centre bounce, passed and ran on to get on the end. Best thing he did all day. Nank was working himself to exhaustion. With 12 seconds left he found the ball at his feet and just nudged it away gently like it was a possum in his driveway and he was trying to tell if it was alive. Siren. Scores level. First v second. Capacity crowd booing. How good is footy.

At the time I thought – ‘What a great quarter. Anyone’s game. Yeah bad kicking might bite us later but the momentum’s the thing’. How wrong I was. That quarter was our best chance to put a dent in this mob. Their oversize backline were marking only when we kicked it straight to them, and we did that plenty. For some reason our backline was misfiring and and we avoided that problem by ‘playing off a short pitch’, winning it back across the centre. It was really enjoyable to watch if it was divorced from what came before and after.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

I’ll just go with my notes for the 3rd quarter. The AFL Livepass was starting to struggle along with the Tiges.

Conca goals gets KMac cuddle.

Yeo back from the dead, greatest comeback since Gary Lazarus (Fitzroy 1963-70, 132 games).

James Cripps looks like Once In A Lifetime era David Byrne.

Conca flick to Riewoldt.

Cotch stupid 50, then Edwards. Too far back now.

Short again off a very lucky 50 metre penalty.

Astbury on Kennedy = David & Goliath.

Kelli Underwood – boundary duties only – weird.

▰▰▰▰▰▰▰

What I didn’t write was we gave up 7 goals to 3 in the premiership term. And just like that we were 28 points in arrears and our old mate momentum was Back In Town. Our Jack was having an incredible game, but their Jack was having his best of his career. Sheds had faded. George wasted opportunities. Butters was invisible and might miss next week for Rioli. I feel for Stengle that Rioli’s return might cost him a chance.

Martin looked to me to have gone back to the 2016 model. Less trust in his mates – which leads to him doing too much. Cotchin was very solid in adversity. Dylan didn’t have a good game but there was a little moment that showed what great spirit he plays the game in. Gave away a free which sparked a melee but gave the Eagle a little tap later – sorry mate.

There’s lots I don’t understand about footy. Example – we concede the ruck to Naitanui. It is 100% guaranteed he is going to tap it to an Eagle midfielder. We don’t even contest therefore we have an extra man. How in heaven’s name did he repeatedly find a man he could tap to, streaming free in the clear?

Seconds before the final siren Butters demonstrated a fault we have shown all year. 35 out right in front, instead of taking the shot he tried to chip it to Jack. Siren. Jack punched it away.

Votes:
5 Riewoldt for a genuine 4-quarter effort. Showed real leadership all day. His first votes for the year, incredible.
4 Nankervis gave NicNat a great contest. His workload is incredible.
3 Edwards was at his very best in the first half.
2 Cotchin was down early, missed shots, was in our best when the game was running against us. 7 tackles.
1 Conca is not everyone’s cup of tea but I can think of heaps of clubs who’d love to have him.

Unlucky: Short, Caddy, Martin

Round 6 v Collingwood, MCG – The Benny 2018

05/05/2018 By Chris Leave a Comment

I was a few minutes late to the TV and the very first action I saw was George climbing between two Pies to take a ripper of a mark 25 metres out. Then he did something between a Kennedy stutter step and a Running Man and kicked a point. Spectacular, ineffective. This should have been like the Lambert goal in the GWS prelim – an announcement to the effect ‘thanks for coming ladies and gentlemen, this is our game. Please stay and enjoy the minor details’.

Thanks to another magnificent last quarter we did get there in the end. We are outscoring our opposition by 147% in last quarters this year. As @sjross observed it is probably no coincidence we are often up against 21, 20 or 19 fit men at the end. A game against Richmond is no place for the semi-fit, people carrying niggles and under-prepared sides on tight turnarounds. We torched Collingwood in the last term, a team who beat Adelaide a few weeks ago.

A feature of the past week has been everyone with paid positions in the football industry taking turns to agree how terrible footy is now, what can we do to fix it, maybe zones, faster ball-ups, cut teams down to 16. (This is after the previous week when we were handed a night grand final on the basis as far as I could tell that fireworks look pissy in the daytime.) But most Richmond people are basking in the sunshine right now, and the Venn diagram of Tiger Fans / People Who Want To Change Stuff looks like this:

Cotch was fantastic. For such a pin-up who never even raises a sweat, he has a delightful nasty streak. Dusty was quiet early and worked his way into it. Caddy looked underdone but still ended with 4 goals. Snags Higgins was lively and got two in a minute thanks to cartoon knucklehead Lynden Dunn. Imagine getting Dunn and Mayne across to your team in one summer. Rance looked off his best when Cox was a real marking target in the first half, but he got better. Astbury and Grimes were great all day, Houli and Short terrific and Broad looked settled and confident. Nank was arguably best afield playing against a much-vaunted ruckman. People oughta vaunt Nank a bit more.

2 Houli – I love him too.
